Short definition¶
Limit who can access information, such as a conversation’s text.
Concrete example¶
The service cannot read your message, but the intended recipient can.
What it protects¶
Access by unauthorised people or systems, depending on the chosen mechanism.
What it does not protect¶
By itself, does not establish whether identity, presence or timing is hidden.
Why it matters¶
Do not confuse secrecy of text with secrecy of activity.
Technical details
Confidentiality is a property; E2EE is one possible mechanism. The report also groups content and metadata under confidentiality / privacy.
